Weekly Comic Review
Better late than never, I guess. As I get the site more up and running and designed like I want, I’m sure I’ll have more time to post stuff up faster. So, here we go…
Avengers Academy #8 – I’m still not quite sure what to make of this book. I picked it up because I thought I thought it would have potential and because it had Reptil from Super Hero Squad in it. I’ve dropped he book once, picked up some back issues during a holiday sale at my comic shop, and started getting it again. I just can’t seem to connect to the characters at all. I have a feeling this may get dropped again and stay that way.
Brightest Day #18 – I love the whole appearance of the emotional spectrum in the Green Lantern titles and the following Blackest Night so I had to check out Brightest Day. I’m enjoying the story for the most part but I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on. This issue deals with the reborn characters who seem to have gotten the most page space so far: Deadman, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl. (With a couple pages of Captain Boomerang too.) Given Hawk’s return, I really don’t understand Dove’s connection with Deadman. They should keep her developing Hawk during his return even though they are over in Birds of Prey too. I’m also waiting to see how they follow up from this issue with Carter and Shiera. (Not going to spoil it here though.) As for Boomerang, he’s really been boring me. I wish they had kept his son around instead. They had a lot they could have done with him. I really want to see more out of this title though. It definitely lacks the power of the prior storylines. I’ll keep reading it though.
Charmed #5 – I was a big fan of the TV series so had to pick up this show. So far, it’s proving interesting thought it took me a little bit to get used to the artwork and telling who was who. I think this has some potential for those who enjoyed the show. If you didn’t watch the show (and you should if you haven’t!), a lot of it probably won’t make much sense, especially about the inside jokes.
Green Lantern Corps #56 – This issue continues the story that’s been going on around Kyle and Sinestro and the Qwardians. It’s a decent story, everyone playing their roles as you would expect with lots of fighting. Overall, nothing special to note about it though other than watching how the tenuous truce between the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps plays out.
Justice League of America #53 – I’ve always been a fan of the JLA. I’ve seen it go through it’s various incarnations. This current teams just seems like another Teen Titans comic though. Yes, we were missing Starman and Congorilla the past few issues because of the need to pair off against the Crime Syndicate (who is always fun to see). Even with the counterparts set up on the team to make it lay out like the old standards (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Flash), it just doesn’t play out the same. I half expected to see Blue Jay stick around as their version of the Atom as well. It should be interesting to see where they go with the Omega Man story line finished.
Legion of Super Heroes #9 – It’s been good to see the “real” Legion back again. This is the one I grew up with and it’s good to see them back. (Even with Gates included from the other version. I’d love to see a “grump off” between him and Brainiac 5 to see who is worse.) It was also interesting to see the return of Tyroc though without the afro and white disco suit, it’s just not the same. The Durlan attacks unfold further this issue as they continue to grow the characters in ways to introduce them to the new generations without offending and boring the ones what enjoyed the previously. So far, it’s been an enjoyable series.
This reviewing should be interesting as I always used to enjoy stretching my reading out as long as I could. I will try to get my information up as soon as I can though in future weeks.
