Old Heroes Are New Again with a Gay GL
For a new universe, DC already has a lot of gay characters including Batwoman, Midnighter, Apollo, and Bunker. They will be adding one more as the rebooted Alan Scott turns out to be gay. I guess this means we probably won’t be seeing anything of Jade or Obsidian in the new Earth 2 book unless there turns out to be an extra secret in Alan’s past. This is really a big change for a character who has been around as long as Alan has. Since the group we knew as the JSA (not sure if they will call themselves that again in this book) is now following up after the JLA instead of inspiring them and we’ve already seen that Jay Garrick is a teen who will probably get his powers from a god instead of his old “hard water” origin, I guess anything goes here. James Robinson is working on this book so we can expect that a gay character will receive the respect that he deserves and that the storyline should be decent. (James’ work on Starman is still one of my favorite series.) For now, we’ll just have to wait and see where things go and how the rest of the heroes of Earth 2 will react to this. For now, I hope they take time to work on the gay characters they have before just throwing more into the mix. I’m all one for seeing gay characters but I want to see them developed. If we do get another gay character, I’d like to see Pied Piper return as well. For now, I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with Alan thought I’d be interested in knowing why they decided to make him gay this time around.
Oh, and speaking of newsworthy gays, don’t forget to pick up the upcoming wedding of Northstar in Astonishing X-Men.
